DSG November 2019 Update

Dear Members,

As we approach the AGM on 22nd November, here is a brief update as to progress in recent weeks.

Slipway Upgrade

The Development Steering Group has considered the engineers report to upgrade the slipway to 7.5m over its entire length. We are about to seek quotes from pre-cast concrete contractors for the fabrication, supply and installation. An indicative drawing should be available on the Club’s web site by the time you read this. Best viewed on a large screen!

New Environmental Boat Wash

We now have a firm quote of approximately £25,000 for this installation. Half our initial quotes. We also have a better understanding of running costs. We believe that grant may be available and this will form the next phase of our work. Given, grant and a replacement cycle of 10 – 15 years, the anticipated additional cost to each boat owner should be modest and rest assured we would work to minimise that. Given the Environment Agency are prosecuting those who pollute, the Development Steering Group advise that doing nothing is not an option.

Clubhouse Development

Three alternative options have been posted on the web site: 1) do nothing and keep maintaining the existing buildings 2) refurbish the existing and extend so as to provide new changing rooms and additional meeting / member space and 3) new Clubhouse. In the long term, the third approach is what the Development Steering Group recommends, as this will offer Members the best value for money. In reality, it will need to be combined with option 1. Please contact either the Club Secretary or any member of the DSG should you have any questions, as subject to Committee agreement, we would hope to approach the Council in the New Year.

Funding

We have recently put out a call for volunteers. To deliver the above will require additional support from anyone with experience of accounting, banking, finance and fund raising.

Club Mark

The Club’s application for Club Mark status has now been approved by Sport England. Potentially this puts the Club in a better position to secure grant funding and public sector support. Thanks go to Barry Vincent for his patience in progressing our application.

RYA On Board

As mentioned in the last blog the RYA will now provide funding assistance for future Senior Dinghy Instructors, taking the burden off both the Club and the Sailor. Please contact Jacquie Willoughby or any Member of the Committee should you be interested.
